Social Ambassador Winston

Ambassador Winston welcomes you.
Ambassador Winston welcomes you.

Winston loves people. As I previously wrote, while he isn't a fan of other dogs, he adores human company. If he didn't weigh 22 pounds, I think he would be perfect to carry in a baby sack all day, something I know he would enjoy immensely. He is definitely a social ambassador for Welsh Terriers everywhere.

Ambassador Winston is an opportunist, showing no selectivity about who he loves. If you're nearby, he'll approach with his big brown eyes, staring at you. It is a look only he can give.

In Old Town, Alexandria when we go for walks, there are loads of tourists and locals eating, strolling, or canoodling with a lover. The Ambassador believes they all deserve a greeting. He expects each one to put down their fork, pause from smooching, and praise him for his gentle demeanor and cute looks.

His tail sways back and forth, his tongue extended from his open, panting mouth, and he just gazes at them with affection. Ambassador Winston has no shame and is an attention hog even when it isn't welcome.

My husband finds it embarrassing that I have zero problem letting Winston approach people with his pleading 'pet me' look. Of course I am sensitive to people afraid of dogs and steer him away when necessary. Perhaps I am going too far with this, but his tail wag and the pure joy he gets from each greeting just makes me smile.

While out walking on a recent trip, Winston was thrilled by the squeals of delight from several groups of young women. Their exclamations of "He is sooo cute!" and "Look at that tail!" were followed by Ambassador Winston's affectionate kisses and snuggles.

The best encounter of the weekend came from a family of 5 females. The mom and her daughters, not only cooed all over the Ambassador, but knew that he was a Welsh Terrier. And for all my Welsh Terrier friends reading this, you will be glad to know that the mother, who has Airedales, said to her her girls 'the Welsh is the original 'dale'.

We sat and chatted in front of the their hotel for about ten minutes. Ambassador Winston held court, moving from one girl to the next, kissing and staring lovingly at each one, and giving a gentle tail wag of love.

If dogs have social batteries like humans, then Winston's social battery was full to capacity after this experience. I am so proud of my sturdy Welshman for being Ambassador Winston wherever we go.
