Ten Things to Do Before Fall

Every year I get ready for fall by closing up the summer house I grew up in.  Years ago, I created a checklist to ensure that I don't forget anything.  End of summer is also a great time to prepare for the start of fall, with kids heading back to school, and everyone moving back to traditional routines.

This list is meant to get you thinking about what you need to accomplish right now. You might not have a summer place, but everyone has some pre-fall cleaning to do. Just reading this list makes me realize I have some much needed gardening to finish in the next week.

  1. Write a personal list of what you want to do next summer.  While it’s fresh in your mind, jot down what you wish you had done and what you want to do again. If you are a reader, why not set a goal for yourself next summer? Summer party planning is great because everyone can be outside and it stays light outside longer. Put this list someplace where you can easily find it in the spring so that you can fully enjoy next summer.

  2. Clean and prepare your house and clothing Wash and store all your beach towels and summer linens.  Take advantage of end-of-summer sales to start with some new items next summer.

  1. Thoroughly detail your electric or gas grill and purchase new tools if necessary.  Even if you use the grill all year, it’s important to clean the grates and remove excess grease or spent charcoal.  Doing this will make the meat cook properly and taste better tool.

  1. Fall planting time is almost here so purchase springtime bulbs now. It is also time to cut back summer flowers, hostas and other perennials.  With cooler weather and more precipitation, fall is an excellent time to plant new trees and shrubs.

  1. Have your home heating system serviced.  This simple checkup can save you money in the long run.

  2. When was the last time you had your car fully serviced?  Make sure your tires are in good shape with sufficient tread if you live someplace snowy.

  3. Schedule a facial.  Yes, it seems trivial compared to servicing your heat and car, but after a summer in the sun, using sunscreen and catching the rays, your skin will appreciate a little TLC.

  4. If you have a summer house, do a thorough cleaning, including all bedding and pillows. Remove all trash and recycling and clean out the bins.  Turn off power and lock all doors and windows.  Do you need to shut off to the outside hose-bibs?

  5. If you rent a summer home, secure a reservation for next year.  It is nice to come back to a home or unit that you know and love.

  6. Go through photos from the summer and order copies for frames, friends, or loved ones. Cheery summer pictures make great gifts. During the middle of a cold, rainy or snowy winter, it will remind you why you work hard ten to eleven months of the year to take that special summer vacation.

  7. Planning on traveling during the winter? If you haven't started already, this is a good time to secure airfare and look for hotels.  Don't forget to find a petsitter for your furry friends too!
