When a stray cat with firm opinions is taken in by a man full of kindness and love, the resulting story about friendship is sure to be a success. Hit by a car and left to die, sassy and savvy Nana the cat is a stray that will capture your heart.
Nana learns to trust Satoru, the man who rescues him, while Satoru unconditionally shares his affection with the crooked-tailed feline. But how can Satoru help Nana when Nana keeps sabotaging his efforts?
The Traveling Cat Chronicles is not strictly about Nana, but is about a series of visits to several of Satoru's friends from his childhood. Ostensibly, the visits are to locate a good home for Nana. What actually transpires is a touching story of lives reconnected and the quiet ways Satoru connects and helps them all.
Arikawa does a beautiful job describing the countryside that the two companions travel through. As I drove down the highway in California, I could envision the fields in Hokkaido, Mt. Fuji, and the people he connects with along the way. This vivid imagery enhances the reader's connection to the story.
Nana does not actually speak to Satoru; instead, the author gives voice to the cat's thoughts, allowing only the reader to hear what he is saying. Yet, somehow, Satoru understands as well. This touching story about the deep love and friendship between a cat and a man made me laugh and cry.
The audiobook is narrated by George Blagden, who does a masterful job slipping from one character's voice to the next. I found that the narration of the characters added rich depth to both Nana and Satoru.
The Traveling Cat Chronicles is a lovely story that will make you laugh, cry, and ultimately leave you feeling warm and satisfied. Whether you choose to read or listen to the audiobook, this beautifully written story will stay with you.
Meow - this was a good book to listen to! The narrator is an important part, and can affect your opinion of the story. And being a cat parent and lover, I especially liked this book.
